TIPS FOR HEALTHY LIVING, INTERNSHIPS,
SCHOLARSHIPS, RESUMES, & INTERVIEWS

Healthy lifestyle:

College life can be overwhelming for most everyone. Remember that you have a purpose. You have great talents, skills, and gifts that are different from those of others. Be true to yourself. Don't let others dictate to your self-worth. Don't jump into romantic relationships with people that you barely know; get to know them as a classmate, a friend, and/or colleaque first. STOP - WAIT - THINK will this relationship help or hender your goal.

  • Set your personal standards and goals; stand up for your standards - you deserve it.
  • Don't tell others where you are going until you find out where they are going first. If they aren't going in the same direction - keep things basic between you - appreciate the differences.

Here are some healthy lifestyle tips:

  1. Keep fresh fruit, celery sticks, carrots, granola bars, grapes, and deli meats (for protein), oatmeal - grits - Cream of Wheat packets, lots of water, packages of tea and hot chocolate, salad mix, in Tupperware or zip-lock bags ready to go at all times
  2. Take vitamins with your meals
  3. Avoid too much caffiene and energy drinks; never substitute for a meal
  4. Get plenty of rest (staying out all night partying is never healthy)
  5. Don't stay up all night doing homework; you will need a fresh mind to study and absorb lectures
  6. Do cardio exercize for energy (at least 30 minutes per day)
  7. Avoid drugs and alcohol at all costs (substance addictions and recreational use can destroy you and your goals)
  8. Be proactive: Read a chapter ahead before class (over the weekend and on holidays are great times to read ahead, work on essays, term papers, and work with your study group)
  9. Prepare your clothing for class the night before - better yet the weekend before (making sure clothing is washed, ironed, and organized and stored neatly)
  10. Get your professor's contact information, office hours, and meet with them one a regular basis.
  11. Meet with your professors before and when you have a problem and make sure they know you early on.
  12. Meet with your professors to mak esue you understand course material each week, before a quiz, to review an essay before it is due, and before taking an exam
  13. Study for mid-terms and finals the entire semester. Don't cram!!
  14. Don't go it alone. Have courage! Ask your classmates to join your study group and study on a consistent date/time
  15. Never copy anyone elses work or cheat!
  16. Be a positive friendly student
  17. Be respectful
  18. Avoid negative petty talk, gossip, unprofessional language and behavior
  19. Be your personal best
  20. Invest in self-improvement workshops, events, and books
  21. Remember that your parents trust you
  22. You are responsible for your actions not your parents
  23. If you feeling overwhelmed or need help, reach out to your parents, the school health center, or your counselor
  24. Don't hurt others or yourself - you are beautiful and strong. Remember that tough times don't last always
  25. Have fun, surround yourself with positive people, encourage someone with a smile, and enjoy this beautiful journey
 
Scholarships:

Scholarships are very helpful in funding your education, room & board, books, and more:

  1. Seek scholarships from organizations in your field, from your school of major. If in high school meet reguarly with your college advisor and/or counselor for a list local, state, and national scholarships.
  2. Apply early for your scholarship. Don't wait to the last minute to complete your application; you may have to skip a party or a dinner date to get it done.
  3. Obtain letters of recommendations from your teachers, professors, counselors, and non-family members
  4. Attach your resume to your scholarship application
  5. Always have great penmenship, accuracy, and follow the instructions exactly as provided (your scholarshp application may be rejected if you don't follow instructions)
  6. Have a second said of eyes peruse your application

Internships:

Howard University offers career fairs throughout the school year.

  1. Make it a priority to attend as many career fairs as possible with your resume in hand.
  2. Meet and network with as many company recruiters as possible.
  3. Even if, the company isn't recruiting Freshman or Sophomore, provide your resume, and present yourself as a professional when interfacing with the recruiters.
  4. Be confident, smile, and obtain their contact information
 
Your Resume & Letters of Recommendation:
  1. Your resume is a summary of your work experience and academic achievement.
  2. Remember to keep it current, no more than 1 page, and have your resume with you in a folder at all times.
  3. It is always good to make a good impression on your professors, dean, and college advisors as they will often provide your letters of recommendation.

Interviews:
Dressed for success

Prior to a job interview:

  1. Research the details about the company, e.g. their vision, motto, mission statement, their service, products, consumers, partners, etc. Note your findings and have them ready for your interview
  2. Request the interviewer's name
  3. Have questions for interviewer
  4. Dress for success
    • Men - shirt, tie, slacks, dress shoes, clean/ironed, neat hair, great hygiene, no earrings
    • Ladies - business suit, dress, hair neatly & professionally styled, light makeup, no-revealing or form fitting clothing, no large hoop earrings
  5. Eat a light meal before your interview

During the interview:

  1. Be confident, but not arrogant
  2. Be a good listener
  3. If you don't know the answer to a question that is asked of you, ask to take a moment to think about it; don't waste the interviewer's time
  4. Be on time (arrive 15 minutes early)
  5. Be courteous
  6. Smile and be kind
  7. Wait for the interviewer to offer you a seat
  8. Relax, don't be nervous
  9. Have a firm handshake and introduce yourself

After the interview:

  1. Thank the interviewer for their time
  2. Send or bring a handwritten 'Thank you" note thanking them for their time and consideration
  3. If the interview is over the phone, request a mailing address for your thank you letter to be sent
